What and who usually inspires you to write characters a certain way?
I know that recently I’ve been thinking a lot about my characters, to the point where I feel like they are all friends of mine, which is good I guess. I usually start with an image of the kind of person I have in my head for my characters and then as time goes on, I try to find a person online that is similar – hard life right?! Seriously though, sometimes a person just falls into my lap and I don’t have to have a good Google (dread to think how badly cookied I am!) For example, I was watching the Fashion Police last week – I do love me some Joan Rivers – and they started talking about Tom Brady. Now, I recognised the name, but I still have no idea why, maybe from seeing it online somewhere? I don’t watch American Football, I mean we have ESPN but over here but it’s not really that big. So, when his face appeared on my screen I actually froze, spoon halfway into mouth – not a pretty sight I’ll grant you – but there he was, my Jamie!! He is just how I described the character look-wise in my book, I couldn’t believe it.
I don’t know about anyone else, but I find that when I have a picture like that to keep looking at, it helps inspire me and to actually visualize the way they speak, the way they move, everything.
I’m thinking of doing a post about my characters soon, what does everybody think? Yey or nay (yes or no?!) I’m about three quarters of the way through writing my book now, then there’s the editing process etc but I’m excited to get some bits out there into the big wide world, any hints or tips would be greatly appreciated 🙂
